Can I Use Baking Soda In My Carpet Cleaner?

I was wondering if instead of buying the Bissell carpet vacuum cleaner solution could I use something else instead? Like a vinegar/baking soda solution?

Several weeks ago I was heading out the door to a dinner party. In one arm I held a big salad bowl. In the other was a glass jar of salad dressing I had just made. As I tried to manuever open our heavy front door, the jar slipped out of my hand. In slow motion I yelled “Noooooo!” as the glass shattered on the wood floor and the contents splattered all over the wall and our cheap apartment carpet.

You guys, I was so upset. I was already late to this party and all I wanted to do was sit down in the middle of this puddle of oil and vinegar and cry. Instead I picked up the glass pieces, did a quick wipe up with paper towels and left the big clean up until later. Over the next few weeks I tried every carpet cleaner at my local grocery stores (yes, plural). Nothing was working. And my front entry way continued to look like this.

I didn’t want visitors because it was so embarrassing. No, this condo is not our own but I like to live in cleanliness so I continued to try to clean it with no luck. Then my mom came to visit and suggested I try white vinegar. I didn’t really give it much thought because it seemed either too easy or too smelly.

homemade carpet stain remover

Well, this weekend I had enough. I searched for a remedy and found it! Of course, it contains white vinegar because my mother is always right. So I’m going to share with you my wisdom because I’m sure I’m not the first person to spill oil-based something on their carpet (right?).

  1. Scrape up the liquid (I had already done this weeks ago).
  2. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on stain to let absorb for 10 minutes and then vacuum.
  3. Mix one tablespoon clear dishwashing liquid and one tablespoon white vinegar with two cups of warm water.
  4. Using a white cloth (I strongly believe in microfiber washcloths), sponge the stain with the detergent/vinegar solution and blot until all the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Sponge off with cold water and blot dry.

I have owned a Bissell, Dirt Devil and Hoover consumer machines. I currently have the Hoover (free from a dumpster) which works pretty well. From a personal preference standpoint, I like the scrub brush style of the Hoover more than the Bissell. It is easier to remove and clean and appears to scrub the carpet better. And until now I choose Bissell is best vacuum cleaner for carpet!

Guides homemade carpet powder without baking soda

I have 8 inside furbabies.  Yes, you read that right.  Eight!  4 cats & 4 dogs.  Needless to say, when it comes to products that make my house smell nice – I am a fan. Carpet powder is one product that I can’t do without.  Even though it is a reasonable price, I buy so much of it that it works out to be pretty expensive.  Plus, it doesn’t always work as well as I like.

Homemade carpet powder to the rescue!!  It’s cheap & it has not met an odor that it doesn’t take care of. All you need is baking soda & orange essential oil.  You can use other essential oils if you like, but I like the orange because of the great clean smell that it gives off.  Some readers have also suggested using cloves instead of the essential oil, and while I haven’t tried that personally – I’ve heard some great stuff about it!

It is also nice to have an empty Parmesan cheese container, or some other shaker.

Mix the baking soda & several drops of the orange essential oil (or other essential oil of your choice) together in a bowl using a whisk.  Then, spoon the mixture into your shaker.  OR… you can do this the lazy way like me and just put it all into your container & do the hokey pokey & shake all around…

You can also add a couple tablespoons of borax (found with the laundry detergent) or food grade D.E. to repel fleas.  The food grade d.e. is great for repelling bed bugs too!

Sprinkle onto your carpets – let it sit for about 15 minutes, then vacuum up.

Simple & thrifty – and works like a charm.

Some vacuums are not made for powder though – the motors just can’t handle it! I actually have an older thrift store vacuum that I use just for this purpose. Shop vacs are also great! This recipe is for those of you that buy carpet powder & already have a vacuum that they use to suck up the powder with.

I can thoroughly recommend a dyson animal cordless. My daughter first had one and I thought it was hideously expensive but the more I came to see it and use it the better value it represents. I now have one mounted on a kitchen wall and it’s so easy just to pick up and use whereas a normal vac is such a chore. It’s light, picks up a frightening amount of fluff and is perfect on my marble kitchen, wooden floors downstairs and carpet on stairs and bedrooms. Vinyl no problem either. It’s one of those few appliances in life you would automatically replace with the latest model when it eventually gave up the ghost, many years hence I hope. No bags and attachments for sofas, etc. An absolute must have. It’s best cordless vacuum for hardwood floors and carpet.
